I started this blog for many reasons, but first and foremost I am a believer of the Bible and Jesus. When I first heard of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation, I immediately began working on this site. I never covered the election of a pope before, and now that I'm growing in my faith, I know this was going to be a fun and rewarding project. Why the name Accidental Pope? That's easy, because my father-in-law came up with the story concept for a novel, The Accidental Pope: A Novel
Accidental Pope, written by Robin Moore and Ray Flynn. The premise of the book is that the pope dies, the cardinals go into the conclave and have a hard time selecting the pope. During the discourse, an American cardinal jokingly suggests that the conclave vote in a friend he has, a New England fisherman, a father, a catholic, and now a candidate for pope. My father-in-law, a Roman Catholic priest is a great guy. Yes, he is a priest and since leaving the church he says daily mass every morning in the privacy of his own home. My father also studied to be a priest, but left the seminary before finishing.

This is a very important and profound time in history. I have the opportunity to witness, reflect and pray for the process of selecting a new pope for the Catholic Church. I teach my son's catechism class and over the past two years I've become closer to God. I read the entire Bible last year and attended a weekend Emmaus retreat. I also plan on walking 13 miles in an all day pilgrimage, where we visit many churches, walk, pray and sing along the way. My spirit is strong and I humbly pray and give thanks for all that I am provided. I'm hoping that I am making a difference in this world that is required and mandated by the Lord.
