The Color of the Smoke

Rainbow colored smoke

FIRE! A poof of smoke appears. The crowd gathers around the chimney and a hush of oohs and ahhs are heard. Why the reaction to the smoke? There will soon be a meeting by the College of Cardinals to decide who the next poe will be. This takes place, in great secret, in the Sistine Chapel, using paper ballots. After each round of voting, the paper ballots are burned. This is done for two reasons, 1) destroy the ballots to have no record of leading candidates, 2) to inform the world of the progress of the conclave. Special chemicals are added to the ballots to produce the colors.

Could you be the next Pope?

Red Smooth Dachshund with Pope Hat. This is Fionn.

Let's face it, my dachshund, Fionn, will never be pope. My kids laughed when they saw him with the hat on. We all know that only the upper echelon of the Roman Catholic Church have the highest chance of being considered for the papacy. Cardinals and well known bishops get the serious consideration. The last non-cardinal elected pope was Urban VI in 1379, over 600 years ago. Sound familiar? The last time a pope resigned was over 600 years ago. Maybe the time is now that the College of Cardinal make an out-of-the box choice. Should we have an American pope?
